I have done it both ways and I tell you from experience it is far more productive and enjoyable when I plan it. I’m not talking about having no room in your life for spontaneity but I am talking about where you want to be this time next year. Do you want to stand out in your industry or be part of the landscape? Do you want a new career or be a leader in the one you are currently in? Is there a house you want to payoff or buy? Weight you want to lose or be able to lift? It doesn’t matter what you want to accomplish in 2010 if you don’t plan it the likelihood of it actually happening is slim to none. Take some time to dream about what you really want to accomplish this year, not what you need to survive but what you would be doing if you could and dream big!
Now its time to figure out how to get there. Look at the practical side but also look at ways to keep the dream in front of you as often as possible. I use a couple of techniques that work for me. I use a dream board or goal board I put pictures and phrases that mean something to me on the board then place it where I will see it every day 1st thing in the morning and last thing at night. This way the dream does not die because I forgot it. Another thing I do is use I am statements, I learned this from Kody Bateman. It simple, I decided what I want and turn it in to and I am statement verses I want or I will statement. I am living the life God intended me to live, I am living an adventurous life, I am a blessing to others, I am attracting the right people to my business, you get the Idea. (Statements, plural) I then take these statements put them where I will read them frequently and I set down at the beginning of the year and send myself cards with these statements in them or on the front. I have system that I can set up to send them to me every 3 to 5 weeks so it keeps me motivated. These are some of the things that work for me but find what works for you.
Other techniques to reach my goals
- DO SOMETHING EVERY DAY toward meeting the goals.
- Make a list each day of what needs to be accomplished
- Do the hardest task or the least desirable task 1st (otherwise it will never get done)
- Have an accountability partner, friend or mentor to talk to on a regular basis
- Learn (the world is changing and I don’t want to be left behind)
- Laugh when it does not go my way (life is short to cry over spilt milk)
I hope this helps you get stated off in the right direction.
